Finding a cat sitter with The Vet Whetstone

July 21, 2018

If you’re heading off on holiday and don’t want to put your cat in a cattery, there is always the option of a pet sitter, someone who will visit your home to feed and play with your pet during your absence.

But, just as you wouldn’t leave your child with a someone you didn’t know and trust, neither would you do the same for your pet, so The Vet Whetstone has some suggestions on how to find the right carer so you can have a happy holiday knowing your cat’s in good hands. And if you still have queries after reading this article, you can always contact us for more advice.

Word of mouth is always a good place to start, so ask around friends to see if anyone has recommendations.

Start looking well before you’re due to go away. As with anyone who does a good job, pet sitters get booked up early, especially during the holiday seasons.

Have a list of questions ready to ask your potential sitter, so the likes of:

  • How long have you been doing this?
  • Do you have any relevant animal experience outside of sitting?
  • Have you had to deal with any emergencies while pet sitting?
  • Do you provide a written agreement and what are the terms?

Be sure to let your chosen carer know if your cat has any medical issues or if there is anything that is likely to make it nervous or react adversely.

While some cat sitters may just pop in and out at food times and spend a little while playing with and petting your cat, if your pet does have anxiety issues around separation it will be best to talk to our vet, Jose, who can advise on whether it might be best to have someone living in your home all the time you are away.

If you have any worries or queries at all on finding a cat sitter, do call us on 020 8368 9798 and we can talk you through the process in more depth and make some useful suggestions.
