Why flea treatment for your cat is so important

February 7, 2019

As we head towards spring, you’ll likely find yourself coming up against one of your cat’s most tenacious enemies: fleas.

Fleas are tiny, jumping insects that bite living flesh. They live on cats, but can also bite people and other animals. Even worse, they can lay thousands of eggs after feeding, so before long you could find your pets and your home infested with parasites.

The good news is that there’re flea treatments available to deal with cat fleas quickly and effectively. Whether you’re seeking prevention or keeping an existing problem under control, have a chat with the team at our Oakleigh Road North practice and we’ll be happy to go through your options with you.

How to spot cat fleas

To make sure your pet doesn’t suffer, you need to know how to spot cat fleas.

Keep an eye out for flea droppings around your home. They look like small bits of dirt, and they dissolve into a small red spot if you touch them with damp cotton wool.

Warm weather speeds up the lifecycle of cat fleas and increases their appetite, so it’s especially important to protect your cat from fleas once spring arrives in North London.

Cat fleas will feed on a cat’s blood, then lay eggs in its fur, which can be transferred all over your home – especially beds and carpets. When the larvae hatch, they quickly grow into pupae and then into mature fleas, ready to feed and lay more eggs.

Treatment for cat fleas

A spot-on solution can be applied directly to your pet’s skin somewhere they can’t reach, like the area between the neck and upper back. This will help to prevent and destroy fleas. You can also use environmental sprays to help keep your home flea-free.

It’s extremely important to ask your cat’s vet for advice about which flea treatment to use, as the wrong one could fail to tackle the problem or even be harmful to your pet.

Just ask about flea treatments next time you’re at our vet practice in Whetstone, or give us a call to make an appointment.
